6C: Isolating the Unknown
Activity 1
Activity 2
Solve Equations to Get a chance to score.
Overview
To solve algebraic equations, you must isolate the variable (get it by itself on one side).
Building Up the expression
It helps to understand how to build up the expression first. That is going from just x to a complicated expression like (3x+5)/4. You must use the PEMDAS rules to know what to first.
How it works
1) Start with you variable x
2) Mulitiply by 3 3x
3) Add 5 3x+5
4) Divide by 4 (3x+5)/4
Isolating the Variable
To isolate the variable is to get it by itself on one side. That is going from a complicated expression to one variable, like going from an expression like (3x+5)/4. It is the opposite of Building up.
1) Start with the expression (3x+5)/4
2) Times by 4 (opposite at divide by 4) 3x+5
2) Subtract 5 (opposite of add by 5) 3x
4) Divide by 3 (opposite of multiply by 3) x
I'm left with the variable all alone! That is isolating the variable.
